JOB SUMMARY
Works under minimal supervision to provide knowledge and expertise in operation and support of chemical safety programs and compliance with regulatory agencies and national guidelines. 
This role is expected to complete functions critical to the Chemical Safety team which include, but are not limited to: indoor air quality monitoring, safety equipment testing, conducting surveys/inspections in both research and health care settings, exposure monitoring, emergency response, incident investigation, hazardous waste management and collection, controlled substance policy education and surveys, training of new employees, and consulting activities related to chemical safety.

    Bachelor's Degree in safety related field 
     
  • Experience
    No experience required. 

     

Preferred

  • Chemical Safety experience in healthcare or research environment
  • Certifications - ASP, CSP, CHMM, CIH


JOB DUTIES

  • Performs surveys of laboratories and facilities to ensure adherence to safe practices and procedures; responsible for monthly laboratory and follow-up surveys; responsible for annual validation of chemical fume hoods.
  • Reviews research projects submitted for hazardous materials permitting on behalf of chemical safety; denotes safety deficiencies and assists with monthly Chemical Safety Committee (CSC) meeting planning.
  • Ensures employee health and safety standards with a focus on chemical safety are met in all areas of the organization. Identifies potential chemical safety hazards, prepares reports on conditions, and takes action to mitigate identified deficiencies.
  • Delivers safety training with a focus on chemical and lab safety content to all departments on campus. Aids in creating safety training and updates safety training content.
  • Performs chemical sampling, industrial hygiene monitoring, and air quality checks. Creates reports to communicate results and any needed remediation or safety improvements.
  • Investigates chemical safety-related and environmental incidents; responds to emergencies involving hazards that are chemical in nature; identifies causes and how to prevent their recurrence.
  • Develops safety guidance, assists with SOPs, and other educational documents in response to identification of areas of deficiency with departments.
  • Ensures proper hazardous materials management for both the research enterprise and health system to include inventory management, use, security, and disposal.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
